The Alexander Technique is a series of individual lessons in which we learn a more 'body-friendly' approach to life. The way we use our body affects not only our appearance and performance but also our general health. Good use means co-operating with our body's natural design and functioning and allowing its subtle 'automatic' reflexes to give us the proper support in sitting, standing and moving. Over the years many of us learn unconscious habits which interfere with this natural co-ordination, and the aim of the Alexander Technique is to recognise and release this interference so as to restore natural poise.

In the lessons you will learn some "functional anatomy" regarding the position and movement potential of different joints and about the appropriate alignment and co-ordination of your body. Alongside this the teacher will help you, with a combination of verbal explanation and gentle touch to be aware of and release unnecessary tension and to experience healthier and more natural patterns of movement. You will also be shown the Alexander Rest Position which you will be encouraged to use for yourself on a daily basis, both to release accumulated tension and to become used to your body being more open and balanced whether at rest or in activity. Bit by bit your ability to be aware of and improve your co-ordination whatever you are doing expands and you will have more choice in how you respond to different situations.

As the Alexander Technique is something you learn, rather than a treatment, it complements other approaches and is often suggested by doctors and other health professionals. In particular osteopaths, chiropractics or physiotherapists, having alleviated severe symptoms of mis-use, may then recommend the Technique to prevent further problems occurring.

The Technique is concerned with general co-ordination and quality of movement and can benefit anyone motivated to apply it in their life. Personal reasons for taking a course of lessons include health problems, to be free from pain, injury prevention, posture, presentation and appearance, and also performance in sport and the arts.

Particular Applications

Health Problems

Many complaints such as back and neck problems are strongly influenced by poor posture and excess tension and unless these causes are addressed removal of symptoms by drugs or manipulation may be short lived. Even when the Technique on its own does not relieve pain, the release of tension and improved use will always be helpful and tend to support other approaches.

Injury Prevention

Mis-use and bad co-ordination over a period of time produce many physical complaints and can lead to back and other injuries whether it be while gardening or doing housework at home or when lifting at work. For office work, good ergonomic layout of desks, chairs and keyboards is important but it needs to be supported by good posture and co-ordination.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy, birth and adapting to a new baby can place great strain on the mother's body and if mis-use is already present then this can lead to back ache and other problems. Lessons in the Technique can be a great support throughout.

Posture, Appearance and Self-Awareness

Allowing yourself to be physically open and expanded not only improves appearance, health and confidence but can also give a sense of being more fully your self. It enhances self-expression and presentation skills.

Performance in Sport and the Arts

The major music and drama schools in Britain and America have had Alexander Teachers on their staff for many years since they realise that any unnecessary tension interferes with performance and expression. The same principles apply in sport and result in improved performance and less injury.

Welcome to the BodyTalk System™ where I invite you to discover the story of your health, told by your body!

Good health relies on a good flow of information within all parts and aspects of the body - if that communication flow is compromised, challenges can arise.  A BodyTalk session can open a space for listening and finding a way forward through working together on all levels.

In a session, we find out more about the story behind the symptom: there may be stress involved, emotional trauma, injury or aspects of your environment, history and lifestyle that have an impact on you. Through neuromuscular feedback BodyTalk identifies where the flow of health has been interrupted, and gentle tapping techniques restore lost connections, so that all body systems can again work at their very best and start the self-healing process.

BodyTalk draws on some of the oldest health care traditions as well as current research in the fields of biology and medicine to address both simple and complex issues in an individualized way. Because it is directed by neuromuscular feedback from the client's system, BodyTalk is suitable for all ages and conditions. If you are already receiving treatment, BodyTalk can be helpful alongside to support your treatment strategy and get the most out of it.

I am a member of the International BodyTalk Association (see www.bodytalksystem.com) and as a Certified BodyTalk Practitioner I am committed to ongoing further training including the newest research within the BodyTalk system.

Mark Jones - Counselling

Counselling

Healthworks Practitioner: Mark Jones.

All of us alive today face problems and challenges to our sense of wellbeing.

Usually we manage to muddle through, sometimes well and sometimes less well, and we carry on trying to live our best lives.

It can happen that we are faced with something that seems to have us stuck and feeling unable to move forward.

It may be a new situation or one that seems to keep repeating itself.

If you are thinking about counselling it is probably because you realise that you need some help to get unstuck and to bring about some sort of a change, or to regain some sense of control over what is going on in your life.

That realisation is a great start.

Many of us have come to feel that if we can't sort our problems out on our own, then there is something wrong with us.  I do not believe this.

I work in a person-centred way, which means that I do believe that we all have the desire and the innate ability to live positive and fulfilling lives.

By establishing a relationship of trust and honesty, client and counsellor can together explore what is going on in a way that has meaning for you, the client.

The experience of being truly listened to, without the fear that we might be judged, can allow us to think and feel more freely.

I love doing this work. The context of counselling allows me to connect with clients in a way that feels real and that is a precious thing.

Like many of us I have arrived at this point in my life after a long and winding road of varied experience, not all of it pleasant at the time, and I am glad to be here now - older and hopefully wiser.

I currently work part-time as a School Counsellor and volunteer for a Local Charity whose mission is to eradicate Poverty in Moray.

For years I have benefitted from, and been interested in Group work.

It sits well alongside one-to-one sessions and offers participants a sense of belonging, peer support and an opportunity to learn from each other.

I hold a Diploma of Higher Education in Counselling and Psychotherapy from the University of the Highlands and Islands and am a member of COSCA - the governing body for Counselling in Scotland.

Sessions will last an hour and will cost £ 40.00 .

I work with young people (12 years and over) and adults.

I prefer to work face to face but am willing to meet online if preferred.

I look forward to meeting you.

Sometimes my only remaining choice is to follow a path
that I fear will be difficult and painful.
When this is so, it gives me courage to know that I have
a trusted companion, a fellow-traveller by my side
.

Creative Kinesiology

Healthworks Practitioner: Romany Buck

Hello! You’re welcome to come and explore how I work as a ‘Creative Kinesiology‘ and ‘Touch for Health’  practitioner…

Using an intuitive dowsing technique known as ‘ask the body’ I track where and what inner disturbances are causing your health problems and then we work together to guide your physical, psychological, bio-chemical and spiritual aspects on their healing path

Thus our sessions can be described as an Adventure into The Unknown!

Only your body’s amazing intelligence knows what’s needed so whatever your problems, or life issues, your body is trying to tell you to wake up and listen to its natural wisdom

Hence Emotional, mental and spiritual disturbances can show up on the physical level and often in a person’s energy fields, producing a whole range of symptoms, dysfunction and confusion

So whether you’re struggling with anything….ie chronic pain, poor digestion, anxiety, depression, past trauma, lack of direction or possibly a recent injury….the innate intelligence of your body/mind can enable healing in multiple ways.….at times quite miraculously!

Based on decades of both professional and personal experience…..as well as an understanding that combines both Eastern and Western medicine….I will invite your body’s ‘bio-computer’ to communicate exactly what is needed and where

My Skills

Touch for Health practitioner (1981)

About Traditional Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese acupuncture is a tried and tested system of complementary medicine.  The Chinese and other eastern cultures have been using acupuncture to restore, promote and maintain good health for thousands of years.

There is a growing body of research evidence that shows acupuncture to be a cost effective form of treatment for a wide range of conditions, and more and more people are finding this long established therapy can offer an effective solution to all manner of today's ills.

Acupuncture is considered safe and suitable for all ages, including babies and children. It can also be used alongside and in support of conventional medical treatments.

The traditional system of Chinese medicine looks at pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance. The overall aim of acupuncture treatment is to restore the body's natural equilibrium. Physical and psycho-emotional aspects of health are seen as entirely interdependent.

Among the most common causes of imbalance and ill-health are: emotional and physical stress; poor nutrition; infection and injury.

What Acupuncture Treats

The World Health Organisation Acupuncture has long supported the role of traditional acupuncture and has published a list of conditions that can be helped with acupuncture treatment, including:

    • Pain: headaches, back pain, migraine, sciatica, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel syndrome
    • Women's health: fertility, infertility ART, pregnancy, childbirth, endometriosis, period pains, menopausal symptoms, PCOS, PMS
    • Digestive disorders: IBS, nausea & vomiting, obesity
    • Chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia
    • Acne, eczema, psoriasis
    • Asthma, hayfever, colds, flu
    • Anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia

    • Hypertension, stroke, multiple sclerosis

For further information on the latest evidence-based research, please visit the British Acupuncture Council's website: www.acupuncture.org.uk

Diagnosis & Treatment

Traditional acupuncturists are trained to use subtle diagnostic techniques to explore each individual's specific patterns of health and imbalance, and to determine the root cause of illness and the best course of treatment.

Acupuncture treatments involve the insertion of very fine needles at specific points around the body in order to regulate blood flow, alleviate pain, stimulate the body's own healing mechanisms and to balance emotions.

Treatments usually last up to an hour (up to 1.5 hours for initial consultation and treatment).

For further information or to make an appointment, please contact James as above.
