Kay Player - Counselling

Counselling

Healthworks Practitioner:  Kay Player

Telephone: 07577 978741

Email:  info@ipsaycounselling.co.uk

Website:  www.ipsaycounselling.co.uk

I am a highly empathic counsellor, approachable, and passionate about helping clients.  By having a respectful, gentle, and non-judgemental approach, I encourage you to speak freely to gain insight and view situations from a different perspective.  I love my work and I feel lucky to be able to help others.

I offer an integrative approach to therapy.  This means I integrate different styles of counselling depending on what is most effective for you at any given time.  Drawing from mainstream theoretical perspectives and models helps provide a unique therapy for each individual’s needs.

Bereavement, Loss and Life Changing Situation

My specialism is bereavement, loss and life changing situations.  Bereavement and loss are often misunderstood, and its impact often underestimated.  There are various kinds of loss which can be experienced throughout our lives, such as bereavement, redundancy or divorce, and people often feel no one else understands.  Not only can this lead to feelings of confusion but also feelings of alienation and loneliness.  Together we can explore your grief to better understand your feelings and develop ways of coping day to day; focusing on what it is like to be human in a world where time to process grief is usually very limited and seldom understood.  I offer counselling for bereavement from, among other things, long term illness, sudden death, loss of a baby and to those bereaved by suicide.

Anxiety and Depression

Feelings of anxiety and depression do not discriminate and can affect anyone.  Sometimes in life, the situations, challenges, and crossroads we once could work through, can start to feel more difficult.  Whether there has been a specific incident that has led to feelings of depression and a newfound anxiousness, or you have been struggling for a long period, I will provide you with a non-judgemental space to explore your feelings and develop tools to help you cope.

Training and Professional Background

I have been a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy since 2005, becoming a registered member (MBACP) following qualification in 2008.  I adhere to the BACP ethical framework for the Counselling Professions. I also have regular supervision, hold full professional liability insurance and enhanced DBS.

I hold a first-class honours degree in Counselling and Psychology and before establishing my own practice, gained extensive experience working in mainstream organisations including Age UK and Relate.  I also co-founded a bereavement group aimed at helping women affected by the loss of a baby.

I currently also work part time coordinating bereavement support for the elderly.

Sessions Offered and Cost

I understand that it sometimes requires courage to enquire about counselling, so I try to be flexible regarding session times, aiming to see clients as soon as possible.  I offer face-to-face, online and telephone counselling.  Counselling sessions are for 50 minutes and the cost is £40 per session.  I offer a concession rate for multi session bookings so please do enquire when you make contact.

Craniosacral Therapy; Swedish Massage

Healthworks Practitioner: Pavel Skapa MA CST-T MCHP

Email: handsnfeet@pm.me
Phone: 07495 633919

About me

I studied Swedish Massage and Reflexology at Scottish Massage School in Edinburgh, and I hold a certificate in both. I also completed two levels of hands-free massage at KnotStressed Institute in Edinburgh. I hold a certificate in Craniosacral Therapy from Upledger Institute in Brighton.

Previously I studied and have a degree in Psychology.

Chp Member Logo Removebg PreviewI train with a teacher of Esalen massage and Scaraveli yoga and I'm implementing the skills and techniques into my practice.

I've been studying and practicing Buddhist mindfulness and insight meditation since 2010 and tai chi since 2016.

I am a member of Complementary Health Professionals.

Craniosacral Therapy

What is CranioSacral therapy

Using gentle touch and awareness we offer a safe, mindful space, in which the body and mind can unwind and release stagnations and blockages.

In his work, Dr. Upledger describes the structures and mechanism of the cranio-sacral system which is based on cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) being produced by specialised cells in our brain. As CSF circulates inside the meningeal membranes of the brain and the spine it produces a specific rhythm.

CST requires detailed knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the human body and especially of the nervous system and its associated structures. At the same time, CST provides a safe space for discovery and experience on a journey towards wider awareness and feeling freer in our bodies and minds.

Somato-emotional release

Sinking into a deeper state of relaxation and widening our awareness during the craniosacral session might lead to remembering feelings and sensations of which we haven't been aware. Process of recalling and integrating these ''forgotten'' parts of ourselfs we call somato-emotional release. It can involve tears, laughter, sudden realisations or experiencing new and surprising sensations.

Vectors, chacras and meridians

Dr. Upledger was familiar with the ancient system of chakras and meridians and invented his way of balancing them. These techniques are part of craniosacral treatment. He also discovered energy lines laying deep in the body and called them vectors. These lines can be out of alignment as a result of trauma or injury. During the session, we bring them back into balance.

What happens during the session

CST is a hands-on therapy, the client is usually laying on a couch in a comfortable position. Using gentle touch with our ‘listening hands’ and gentle mobilisation we free up painful, restricted areas of the body. In the case of somato-emotional release, gentle dialog and holding of the space can be part of the treatment.

How can CST help you

Ui Cst T Certified Logo ColorThere is a wide range of issues on a physical, emotional, or spiritual level where CST can help. It enhances tissue and fluid motion, relaxes connective tissues throughout the body, and restores flexibility of the autonomic nervous system. The enhancing function of the nervous and endocrine systems has a beneficial impact on the other parts of the system and their functions.

For more details or if you have a specific condition and you are not sure if massage can help, feel free to contact me for consultation.

Swedish Massage

What is a Swedish massage

Swedish massage is a whole-body therapeutic massage treatment that works the soft tissues and muscles to help restore health - creating a calming and balancing effect on the nervous system. It uses classic massage techniques to manipulate soft tissue for relaxation and holistic therapeutic purposes.

Holistic approach

The holistic approach stems from the idea that living systems can restore their balance (homeostasis) once hindrances are removed. Relaxation is an important factor in allowing our system to restore its balance. The therapist is there to help promote the client's health by removing blockages and inducing relaxation and self-healing processes. The holistic approach treats an individual as a whole being, paying attention to all its aspects (biological, psychological, social, and spiritual).

Hands-free massage, deep tissue, and other techniques

Being trained in hands-free massage allows me to use my forearms and elbows. Using forearms enhances a nourishing touch of the massage, and using elbows enables me to target deeper layers of muscles and other connective tissue such as fascia (type of connective tissue which holds other structures of the body together).

I also use some other techniques to release soft tissue such as regional tissue release or fascial glide. Regional tissue release involves gentle manipulation of extremities aimed to release tensions or stagnations. During fascial glide gentle traction is applied on the fascia to find and release restricted areas. These techniques are part of my CST training. There is more detailed information on CST in the section about CST.

How can massage help you

These are some of the positive effects of massage:
Reduced muscle tension
Improved function of the musculoskeletal system
Improved circulation
Reduction of pain
Anxiety reduction
Relaxation effects
Enhancing energy levels

What happens during the session

Each session begins by discussing the client's needs. The first session is initiated by filling in a consultation form. Swedish massage traditionally takes place in a lying position with the use of massage oil although performing massage without oil over clothes is an option.

I can either do whole-body massage or focus on specific areas of the body and usually, I combine Swedish massage with other modalities (see the section about reflexology and craniosacral therapy).

For more details or if you have a specific condition and you are not sure if massage can help, feel free to contact me for consultation.

Irene Schenk

Irene Schenk - Shiatsu

19783631-E46D-4E00-918C-2CD558FAD55F

Shiatsu (Japanese Acupressure Massage)

Healthworks Practitioner: Irene Schenk

Tel: 01309 358255
Mob: 07796 716 133
E-mail: shiatsuireneschenk@gmail.com

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a type of body work which allows us to give and receive care and natural healing through non- intrusive touch.

It is a traditional Japanese natural healing therapy developed at the beginning of the 20th century and its roots lie in Traditional Oriental Medicine.  It is a synthesis of traditional oriental massage and modern western techniques of physical manipulation and is a complete healing system through touch.  It was officially recognised as a therapy by the Japanese government in 1964.

How does it work?

Traditional Oriental Medicine believes that life energy or Ki (Japanese), Qi (Chinese) flows throughout the body of all living beings. The flow of this life energy can be accessed through energy pathways called meridians which connect with our vital organs. The functions of the meridians affect not only the physical body, but also the emotional, mental and spiritual body thus giving the receiver of Shiatsu a wide range of benefits.

When imbalance or stagnation occur in the flow of Ki/Energy, signs of discomfort and unease may arise and more pronounced symptoms of illness and disease may appear in longstanding disturbances of energy flow.

The Shiatsu practitioner applies pressure, holding and stretching techniques to improve the flow of energy through bringing it to areas in need and dispersing it from where it is congested, stimulating the body's natural healing power to restore balance and health. This benefits the blood and lymph flow and can improve flexibility and posture.

What happens during a session?

The treatment takes place on a low treatment couch or on a padded futon on the floor, depending on the client's preference and condition.  In cases where lying down is not an option the treatment can be done in a seated or kneeling position.

Shiatsu is applied through light comfortable clothing and there is no need to undress.  Literally translated Shiatsu means "Finger Pressure."  During a session pressure is applied through hands, thumbs, fingers and forearms and occasionally through elbows, knees and feet. Stretching, holding and rotating techniques are applied in various positions such as prone (front), side and supine (back).

The way pressure is applied has a direct effect on the parasympathetic nervous system and a deep sense of peace and relaxation settles in quickly and deepens throughout the treatment.

How can Shiatsu help you?

Most people can benefit from Shiatsu.  You do not need to have a particular medical condition in order to have Shiatsu because of its general strengthening and preventative aspects.

Shiatsu is ideal in the relief of stress and tension, alleviating illness and its symptoms, improving energy levels and easing aches and pains and much more.

As it is deeply relaxing it can help people to improve their sleep patterns.  It can also be very helpful and effective for chronic conditions, assisting the elderly and in palliative care.

Please note that Shiatsu is safe to have alongside most medical treatments prescribed by your GP or other medical practitioner.  However, it is always recommended to check with your GP first.

Your Healthworks Practitioner: Irene Schenk MRSS

I am a fully qualified Shiatsu practitioner and I have practised in Forres, Nairn and the wider Moray area since 1995.

I have studied in Scotland, England and France and graduated from the Aberdeen School of Shiatsu in 1995.  I qualified with the Shiatsu Society of the UK as a registered member in 1996.

I practise a style of Shiatsu called Zen Shiatsu which was developed in Japan in the middle of the last century and incorporates western psychology along with an extended meridian system and aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Zen Shiatsu is based on supportive and empathetic touch and that the theory of the meridian (energy pathways) functions lies beyond the physical.  As in all Traditional Oriental Medicine it is based on the belief that all pain and disease are reflected and clearly show in one's energy.

About Reflexology

Reflexology is a safe, relaxing and non-invasive therapy. It gently treats the whole body through compression massage of the feet (or hands), encouraging overall balance and harmony. Reflex points on the feet are linked to various parts of the body by meridians (a type of energy line).

Reflexology helps to release blockages, tension and pain held in these pathways increasing overall health and well-being. Fiona has been practicing reflexology for over 15 years and continues to be fascinated by the powerful effect it has on people.

Regular reflexology sessions can improve circulation and help boost the immune system preventing illness and increasing energy and vitality. People find it helps to induce deep relaxation and to relieve stress.

Fiona specialises in Maternity and Fertility Reflexology, which supports parents and babies from preconception to after birth. It can help in preparing and supporting a pregnancy and in preventing or alleviating various common symptoms associated with pregnancy and the postnatal period, such as pelvic pain, lower back pain, indigestion, oedema, morning sickness and more.

Website: Counselling Directory

 About me

I work with a person-centred ethos, therefore I believe in your inner ability and birthright to thrive, not simply survive. I have a personal interest in existential and transpersonal therapy, neuroscience and research into trauma, as well as all the different ways that a human being can flourish in the world. I also work as a schools based counsellor, so have experience working with children and young people, particularly teenagers. I am passionate about all the creative forms of personal expression: writing, drawing, making, painting, dancing, singing, spirituality, nature connection. I am fascinated by how humans can heal through adversity, finding their own renewed purpose, meaning and vision. I will be very curious about what makes you tick and what brings you into aliveness and joy.

Why counselling?

Seeking warm empathic support can be a courageous step out of emotional, psychological difficulty towards relief and greater self awareness. You matter and do not need to cope with being overwhelmed alone.

Life can be exceptionally challenging. Whether through stress, anxiety, depression, bereavement or traumatic experiences, you may have come to a point where making sense of your inner and outer world is a struggle. Speaking to someone who can listen without judgement to what you are saying and welcome each feeling you share no matter what can be a lifeline.

How does counselling work

As a qualified counsellor, I will work with you to gently track your experience, feeding back what I notice. I will deeply trust and encourage your own inner ability to discover your own answers. I will steadfastly remind you of your intrinsic worth. I will provide a space where all that you are can be warmly welcomed and accepted. Your issues will be held with respect and we will move forward only at a pace that you are comfortable with.

The process of counselling can be deep work. It is a journey of mystery, finding new words and understandings that might before have been hidden. It can be a transformative experience, as your authentic self might begin to make itself known, and long held ideas fall away. Your life may change in ways you could never predict as you find your own inner resources to deal with your life challenges.

Counselling can help with:

    • Stress, anxiety and depression
    • Difficult life decisions and dilemmas
    • Addictive patterns
    • Traumatic experiences
    • Bereavement
    • Grief in its many forms
    • Relationship issues
    • Loss of meaning, purpose and direction in life
    • Coping with challenging and contradictory feelings, emotions and thoughts

Clients I work with:

Adults, young people and children aged 12 and over.

Type of sessions offered and cost

Face to face, online, telephone and outdoor sessions available. Sessions last an hour and cost £45.

Healthworks is a charitable organisation and offers financial assistance for those in need. For more details please ask.

Alexander Technique

Healthworks Practitioner: Alan Massey (MSTAT)

Tel: 01309 691545
Text: 07871 151351

E-mail: atamassey@gmail.com
Web:  alexanderpresence.co.uk

The Alexander Technique is a series of individual lessons in which we learn a more 'body-friendly' approach to life. The way we use our body affects not only our appearance and performance but also our general health. Good use means co-operating with our body's natural design and functioning and allowing its subtle 'automatic' reflexes to give us the proper support in sitting, standing and moving. Over the years many of us learn unconscious habits which interfere with this natural co-ordination, and the aim of the Alexander Technique is to recognise and release this interference so as to restore natural poise.

In the lessons you will learn some "functional anatomy" regarding the position and movement potential of different joints and about the appropriate alignment and co-ordination of your body. Alongside this the teacher will help you, with a combination of verbal explanation and gentle touch to be aware of and release unnecessary tension and to experience healthier and more natural patterns of movement. You will also be shown the Alexander Rest Position which you will be encouraged to use for yourself on a daily basis, both to release accumulated tension and to become used to your body being more open and balanced whether at rest or in activity. Bit by bit your ability to be aware of and improve your co-ordination whatever you are doing expands and you will have more choice in how you respond to different situations.

As the Alexander Technique is something you learn, rather than a treatment, it complements other approaches and is often suggested by doctors and other health professionals. In particular osteopaths, chiropractics or physiotherapists, having alleviated severe symptoms of mis-use, may then recommend the Technique to prevent further problems occurring.

The Technique is concerned with general co-ordination and quality of movement and can benefit anyone motivated to apply it in their life. Personal reasons for taking a course of lessons include health problems, to be free from pain, injury prevention, posture, presentation and appearance, and also performance in sport and the arts.

Particular Applications

Health Problems

Many complaints such as back and neck problems are strongly influenced by poor posture and excess tension and unless these causes are addressed removal of symptoms by drugs or manipulation may be short lived. Even when the Technique on its own does not relieve pain, the release of tension and improved use will always be helpful and tend to support other approaches.

Injury Prevention

Mis-use and bad co-ordination over a period of time produce many physical complaints and can lead to back and other injuries whether it be while gardening or doing housework at home or when lifting at work. For office work, good ergonomic layout of desks, chairs and keyboards is important but it needs to be supported by good posture and co-ordination.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy, birth and adapting to a new baby can place great strain on the mother's body and if mis-use is already present then this can lead to back ache and other problems. Lessons in the Technique can be a great support throughout.

Posture, Appearance and Self-Awareness

Allowing yourself to be physically open and expanded not only improves appearance, health and confidence but can also give a sense of being more fully your self. It enhances self-expression and presentation skills.

Performance in Sport and the Arts

The major music and drama schools in Britain and America have had Alexander Teachers on their staff for many years since they realise that any unnecessary tension interferes with performance and expression. The same principles apply in sport and result in improved performance and less injury.
